hello,
i've recently been experiencing random shutdowns of my computer; to be exact the computer just powers off, no alerts, no shutdown routine. the light on the motherboard, indicating the power is on, but if i press the power button the computer won't respond. only after 10+ minutes, no matter if i fully unplug it, or leave it, the computer will power back on. i've tried removing some recent hardware/software, updating/downgrading a few drivers, i'm about to do a virus scan just for the hell of it; the temperatures are perfectly normal. any ideas?
my specs:
windows xp pro
athlon xp 2100+
asus a7v333
corsair xms 512mb
radeon 9700 pro
audigy2
a floppy, a hard drive, a burner, and a dvd-romthank you for your time.

It sounds like the motherboard is protecting itself from too much heat.
You may be experiencing a capacitor begging to fry. That will overheat the circuits and turn things off without warning.

jibberboosh, SWAG, cutting off for no apparent reason sounds like some electronic part heating up and dying. My guess is power supply as that isn't unheard of with them. Do you have another you can substitute? If that's not feasable, when it happens, can you check output with a voltmeter?

no unfortunately i don't have another power supply, but i did replace the current one about 4-5 months ago; nor do i own a voltmeter.
