Sudden display shutdown

Nvidia / Geforce4 mx 440 with agp8...

Specs: Windows XP
I connected my computer to dual screen: computer and TV screen and changed the Nvidia video card setup. As a result, after I disconnected the tv screen and changed the Nvidia video card setup to "single display", the computer single display started to shutdown suddenly in the middle of the work. I have to disconnect the computer display, to restart the computer and to connect the display again after the windows xp has restarted, and the display comes back.
I have been told that I have to change the xp display setup as windows starts, but I don't know how to do it, and if it is the right solution. Can someone help?
Thank you.

... try right click empty space on desktop click properties then settings (tab) ... under "display" click 1. can you toggle between monitors?

... also try.. go to start run (type) powercfg.cpl [press ENTER]

... were it says "Turn off monitor" change to "Never"...apply!
