Ok, please donīt laugh, this may be this years most stupid question...

Which is the proper way to disconnect my digital camera from my computer, 1 or 2?

1) Unplugging the USB-cable from the camera and leave the other end of the cable in the USB port of the computer. In other words, the "camera end" of the cable lying unconnected on my desk but the "computer end" of the cable is still connected to the USB-port.

2) Crawl under my desk and unplug the USB-cable from the computer before unplugging the cable from the camera?

six of one, half dozen of the other. As long as either end of the usb cable is no longer connected to something, the device is officially unplugged.

Hahahahahahaha, does it matter? Just unplug the thing anyway you feel like. No harm will come of it anyway.

I knew someone would find that question somewhat funny ;-)

Anyway, the reason for asking was that Iīve had some strange system lockups when the USB cable was connected to the comp without the camera in the other end and no lockups when I had the cable disconnected in bothe ends.

I guess itīs something else causing this then.

Thanks guys.

I always leave the Cable in the USB Port and then plug the Camera in the other 'camera' end as and when I want to put Photos onto the computer - no problems doing it this way

In XP on the right side of toolbar is usually an icon alongside sound icon etc. which when right clicked pops up a clickable window stating "SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE". Click this and the removal window opens so you can choose what USB device you wish to unplug. I feel if XP provides an utility one should use it especially since USB ports carry a 500mA voltage!

I have that Icon too - but it only refers to my External USB Modem which is plugged into a Hub - it says nothing about the Printer and Scanner which are also plugged into the Hub nor about the Hub iteslf which is plugged into the Port

Are you saying we have to use that Icon every time we plug and unplug the Camera from the 'camera' end of the Cable ??

I think the icon is only for certain types of flash media. Unplugging this type of media without "closing" it can result in some kind of damage to the removable drive.

If you don't get the icon, the device does not need to be "closed" before removal.

Devices that are "hot-swappable" can be removed without first getting "permission" via the remove hardware icon. What that icon/utility does is 'close' the device drivers etc. in the PC so they won't hang up other operations. Has nothing to do with the very insignificant power at the USB port, or possible damage to the device.

If I doubleclick the Icon - all that's there to be 'removed' is my External DSL Modem - no mention of Printer - Scanner - Camera etc - I often use a Compact Flash Card too - no problem with just putting it in and out

I only get the icon with a 64mb flash drive, two mp3 players and a harddrive enclosure. These devices are supposed to be hot-swappable. I have used the usb connection on my Linksys modem, but did not get the icon.

I read a post somewhere (I think on this forum) that explained some devices require the icon to be used to avoid windows permanently damaging their file systems. Not sure if it is true, but it sounded good.

I only have that icon when the wireless network adapter card is plugged in. Never using a USB hub, firewire (cameras) or anything else. Never had the need to remove the adapter card (at least lately).

Also, I leave my firewire cable plugged in most of the time even when it is not attached to the cameras. No harm done.

PS - There are no dumb questions; only dumb answers.
