ok a series of events happened
1. power brick(the thing that you plug into the wall outlet and has like 5+ plugs from it, an extension sort of) fried and killed my motherboard.
2. Bought new computer
In the attempt to recover data from my HDD, could not because I had a password so it did not let me access My Documents3. Trying to get data off the hard disc but was stuck on the boot option screen(the screen that allows you to choose which option to boot from ie. safe, last config, normal)
whichever option I select, it gets stuck
even in safe mode it gets stuck after it runs for a while..gets stuck on something called gagp. something4. reinstall xp using that repair thing, not reformat, just reinstall (went successful i think)
5. now at the boot option screen, whichever option I now choose will run, with this bar that will load in like half a second at the bottom of the screen. But then the computer restarts. happens for every option I choose
6. Did the kernel32.dl_ thing...still restarts
Now I dont know what to try.
I just need to recover my data
But I had a password on it so cannot just copy paste it off. Please Help

Hi folks,
I am facing a problem which is related to the one posted above.
Currently, I have two O/S installed in two different partitions. One one partition I have Windows 98 and on the other I have Windows XP.
When I start my PC and reach the O/S selection screen and choose to boot Windows XP, the system restarts and again comes back to the same screen. This happens no matter what option I choose (Safe Mode, Last Good Config that worked etc). Whereas, if I select Windows 98, my PC boots successfully. Thus, logically atleast it does not seem to be a hardware problem.
Another strange thing being that, after several attempts,(say around 10 to 15 attempts), XP boots when I select Last Good Config that works. This problem has begun suddenly, without me installing any new software. Wonder what has caused this problem. Could someone please help. (Tried System Restore, however restore failed as several consecutive attempts to boot XP failed. Is formatting the XP Partition and reinstalling it the only solution??)

Hi sidd
To answer your question... "formatting the XP partition & reinstalling"... thats not the only solutions... Do this the next time:
When you successsfully boot into WIndows XP partition, right click the partition where Windows XP has been installed. Properties > Tools (tab), and Click Error Checking. Check both the boxes. Windows XP informs you that it will do a thorough scan on next re-boot. Now just reboot. I think, it should work properly from next time!
