Stuck on black loading screen on start up.

January 5, 2011 at 19:52:47
Specs: Windows XP
When i turn on the computer, it powers on to the HP splash screen but then hangs up at a black boot screen. The one that comes before Window's even loads up. I think it is a hard drive problem. I had given my friend the motherboard/ processor as i had bought a new one. I have connected the stock psu to the mobo and then plugged his old hard drive to the SATA port on the mobo. We did not plug in the optical drive though because he had an old drive that did not have the proper ports to connect the motherboard. The mobo also used to run Windows 7 when I had it. I am now trying to get it to run with XP. I am able to access the BIOS though so I ran a diagnostics and it says everything works. Thank you for any help.

-HP Stock Motherboard (Onboard GPU)
-AMD Athlon II 630 Quad Core
-500 gb HDD (Pre-used w/ WIndows XP)
-2 gb DDR3 stock ram
-250 Watt PSU Stock

Due to the fact i am not living in my friends house, i will be unable to try any suggestions. I can only tell you if I have done them already and what the outcome was.
