Stuck in windows xp installation!! help!!

February 2, 2011 at 15:37:12
Specs: Windows xp
I have a dell computer an it hasn't been used for a few years since it was ruined by a virus, so i decided to completely re-install windows xp . I don't have the CD for it, and i am re-installing it from the wintt32 from c:/i386.

The problem is: it is stuck at "installing windows" . Every time i try it a window pops up saying

"hardware installation: the USB human interface device has not passed windows logo testing to verify its compatibilty with windows xp..."

then it gives me the option of yes or no to continue the install, which i cannot choose since the mouse AND keyboard both don't work since they cannot be installed. If i unplug them, it continues w/o problem but i still cannot finish the install since they don't work so i cannot choose any options. PLEASE HELP!!

I need this computer for autoCAD so please please answer quickly :(

Does it do that with any USB Keyboard/Mice you plug in, or just those one's? And if the PC has the correct ports, you could try using a PS/2 keyboard/mouse as they pretty much run on anything without a hicccup!

Get a PS/2 keyboard.

What you should have done was just remove the virus using a resue disk.

You can try a USB to PS/2 adapter but they don't always work. Otherwise, you'll have to dig up a true PS/2 keyboard somewhere. Flea market, Goodwill, Craigslist, Freecycle, or buy a brand new one.
