Having finished a hideous saga this afternoon (read: I had the audacity to insert the CD for an XP-compliant game and expect that it might, you know, WORK) and the end result is this:

I can run Civ 3 on my old user profile, but if I try to do anything else (even change the screensaver) it crashes or freezes and cites rundll32.exe as the cause. HOWEVER, if I log on as my alternate user profile, I have NO trouble with this file. I've checked all recently edited versions of rundll32.exe under both profiles and I can't for the life of me understand why it works fine in one and not the other (anyone??)

In the saga this afternoon, after I had tried using the compatability mode in XP to run the game, it made some sort of change that happened too fast to see, when I clicked on something to the effect of "always run in this compatability mode" after using the CM Wizard to find the best version. I tried uninstalling afterwards and was unable to. I had to delete the file folder itself, and I'm hoping this did not cause the problem, since I don't know just how compatability mode might have changed things. I want to use my main user profile as it's the default... and the screensaver crashes every time the faulty .dll tries to run. But if it's the same .dll being accessed, i'm puzzled... why does it work in one profile??

All this to say, I can see no difference in the .dll files, but yet it works in one and crashes in the other. AOL also will not work in the old one for more than 10 minutes or IE for that matter...

Help?

The computer is:
Gateway with XP home
1.7 gig HD
64 MB NVIDIA Geoforce 2 mx 400 i believe

Sorry so long.
