I have developed a strange i.e. problem. I can open internet explorer and go to my home page one time no matter what I set it to or from windows explorer I can go to any page one time. If I click on any other link or favorite from those pages, i.e. closes out to the desktop. Even closes out to desktop if I select Help, About, in Internet Explorer. Many spywares were recently removed via Spysweeper and Spybot. Still scanning with AdAware at the time of this note which was written from another pc. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Johnw,

After all of the cleaning I did just that and the log is now showing clean. Still have the same problem, one page and that's it. If I click on a link or another page, i.e. closes out to the desktop with no error or anything.

Sounds like a bug is still there, L.B.
Make sure with after you download Updates from SpyBot, you click > Immunize on the left hand side of the page & then Immunize up the top of the page. You should end up with 2 large Green Ticks.

Install, update( where applicable ) & run all of these.

Once installed, open IE & up the top you will have a new button ( Swift Sweeper ) Click on it & remove all problems by clicking on > Remove all.

Johnw,

I haven't run all of the above because I simply haven't had the time. I did update AdAware and Spybot and scan with them again under all 4 uses. They found a few more items but the problem still exists. I also immunized with Spybot, scanned again with Microsoft Antispyware and Spysweeper. I can go to any page one time, if I select another, it shows one progress bar and looks like it times out back to the desktop.

Johnw,

I had already done that but I analyzed it again and it only shows a couple of items it recommends, Lexico Dictionary from Dictionary.com. I haven't removed it yet but I can.

Windows XP comes with Internet Explorer 6. Microsoft has made IE part of the core operating system. If you think IE is screwed up, and want to repair it, you must use the sfc command:

Start > Run, copy & paste > Sfc /scannow & press Enter.
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
This will scan and restore protected system files ( which IE is )

Resolved !!!

I appreciate everyone's help and suggestions. It looks like I fixed the problem by uninstalling Norton AV 2003 pro and running Symantec's Norton Remover. Norton had been disabled in msconfig and wasn't starting up because it was causing problems after all of the infections. Evidently it was still tied to I.E. somehow because as soon as I uninstalled I can browse multiple pages. Thanks.
