Strange IE8 problem

Microsoft Windows xp home edition

Specs: Windows XP Home, Athlon64 4000+
For no apparent reason, our main family computer has suddenly developed a strange problem. Until a couple of hours ago, everything was fine but now if anyone tries to open IE or Outlook Express, the program hangs and refuses to connect.

Event viewer has a few error messages, mainly stating that IE and OE have hung but there are some that are different.

There's an error to do with the parallel port driver, but there's nothing plugged into that port.

There's a message about IP address leasing being denied that I don't understand, something to do with DHCPNACK messages.

Finally, there a number stating that system restore couldn't start up because it couldn't find a file. The file is unspecified unfortunately, so I don't know what it's looking for.

The computer is about 4 years old. I built it myself shortly before going to university and it's always behaved fine.

Is it possible that somehow IE has been corrupted? My parents seem to think it's a virus but I'm not convinced having experienced viruses before on one of my other machines.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this to happen? I started the machine in safe mode and IE opened normally, even though it couldn't connect because it was in safe mode.

We do have full data backups, so a full reformat could be performed if necessary but I'm hoping it won't come to that.

Thanks in advance.

I would uninstall IE8 and revert back to IE7. IE8 is too chocked full of junk to run on an XP machine.
Also check in the connections and make sure some spyware didn't initiate the proxy server....if so, uncheck it.

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers

Problem resolved itself about 4 hours later, just before we went on holiday. I have no idea what caused it or how it fixed itself. One reason I use firefox is that it's always been IE that's caused problems.
