I have an icon on my desktop for a "file" that cannot be removed. If I try to delete the icon/file it says "cannot read from source file or disk". I have a feling it is already deleted, just the icon remains. Any idea how to get rid of this annoying icon? It is not a shortcut or program icon or anything I placed the intentionally. Size is 0 bytes. Changing the attributes has no effect. Thx for any suggestions.

Were you ever connected to a network? If so, it may have been a link to a folder on another drive/computer. Right click on it and check properties and see if it shows you the actual location of the file.
That being said, try going into "safe mode" and deleting it there.
If that doesn't work or if you need instructions on how to get to safe mode, post back.

you can google for move on boot or unlocker, that should help to remove the icon.
Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

I've tried deleting the icon in Safe Mode, no luck. I am connected to another computer in the house through a router, but this icon has nothing to do with that, there is no path listed in the properties. Seems it started with a spyware infection, which I have cleaned up. I'll try googling for the things mentioned. Thx.

Unlocker did the trick. Thanks again to everyone for their help. This forum is the best on the net by far.
