Hi. I'm encountering a registry error, and tried the solution listed on http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545. I've seen a lot of posts wherein this has worked for them. But I always get the line: "File not found" or something to that effect whenever I type the line : copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system. Why is that? Any other way to get this file from the cd?

It would be a lot easier to just use system restore if you have it enabled.

If not just install a copy over your existing file system. You wont lose any files, but do system restore first.

:) - I wish it was that easy - safe mode, last known good configuration - all of them don't work. :(

I assume you've been able to get to the recovery console? Have you tried booting to "last know good configuration?" (I think you can get to this by hitting F8 while the computer boots.)

I see that C:\WINDOWS\repair\system exists on my system. Perhaps this file is corrupted (in addition to your registry)--either a case of a bad hard drive or bad luck!

Because the registry is essentially unique to every computer (it contains hardware and driver info), you probably cannot get the file off of the CD. You may have to completely reinstall windows :-(

Sigh... guess that's the only solution then. I'm doing a parallel install right now so that I can pull some of my old files from the system. It's a good thing I have a zip handy. :)
