Solved Stop chkdsk running on 2TB ext HDD with 2% free space

August 19, 2013 at 02:54:00
Specs: Windows XP
Yesterday a chkdsk was started on a 2TB external hard drive which has about 2% free space. The computer has been on all night - over 14 hours so far and it isn't finished.

The progress bar in the box from Tools, is moving forward and it's on Phase 4, but why is it slow?

I've uninstalled a browser and a program but can't update them until I restart the computer.

What could happen?

Running a Dell computer XP Pro SP3.

On a 2 TB you should expect a slow check disk.

You can restart your machine and shouldnt really cause any problems, however your 2% free space should be a cause for concern. if this is your OS drive then you should really consider getting another drive and moving your data to that.

I agree with AlwaysWillingToLearn's assessment that a chkdsk of a 2TB drive over USB is going to be slow, but you're better off letting it sit there and crunch.

What's stage four? Check physical media checks? Yeah, you're going to sit there for a while yet.

Thanks guys. Checking did stop eventually but it did go to a phase 5. Thankfully it was over quick - I think that's when it sorts out free space. Since there's only 2% maybe that's why it went by fast.
