Stop an application with batch cmd

I want to use a batch command to stop a running program so I can load up a new file and then start the program again. What would be the batch command to stop/close/end/quit an application?

Summary: You mean the cmd.exe window? When I test that it doesn't work. It does work writing "start text1.txt" though so I have no problem with the cmd.exe window. The thing is that I get several .txt windows....
