Hello,

I got this new PcChips M848A v5.0 Mobo with a new 256Mb PC2100 stick and put in a case to revive my old Athlon 1200 CPU. Everything worked fine when switched on, however when I try to install Windows XP (80Gb IDE HD), when the message "Setup is installing Windows" appears, a blue screen appears with Stop 0x7e error. Sometimes it is 0x8e or even 0xd1. I tried to format the harddisk but to no avail. I disabled caching from BIOS and now it works, but installation is damn slow (hours just to copy files). What do you think I have wrong? Is CPU cache bad and have to replace CPU, or maybe it's memory?

Return the board and get another one. PC Chips motherboards are notorious fof bad quality right out of the box. I only use gigabyte or intel boards. I have hade several problems with anything else. The mainboard is obviously the problem. A working replacement will fix this. I would see if I could trade up to a gigabyte mb if possible.

I replaced the memory and errors persist. I will try with a different CPU tomorrow (Athlon XP 2400+) and see what happens. If CPU replacement yields the same results, I will replace the motherboard.

Hello,

To see how helpful PCchips customer support is, here is their answer to my question regarding my problem:

Dear Customer,

Please check below link to know M848A spec.
http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Pr...

The M848A v5.0 can't support FSB 200 cpu.
Thanks,

Best regards,
ECSTSD

However, here:

http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Pr...

it states that is it supported, that is why I bought it in the first place!

Lesson learnt: DON'T BUY PCCHIPS.

Hello,

Problem solved: CPU was faulty.

I replaced it with a Athlon XP 2400+ from my PC and worked fine. I put the faulty CPU in my PC's motherboard and it wouldn't boot, no matter what I did.

Thanks for your help!
