Hi everone,
posted about this a while ago, but didnt manage to sort out the problem ( http://computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/32524.html )
right, so windows xp, samsung dvd and lg cd r/w drives, windows media player and winamp and all my music cds...
I cant seem to play any audio cds at all (although i could at one point, which is really damn confusing..)
no matter which cd i try and play nothing happens. in explorer the icon for the cd changes to the music cd icon, double clicking it brings up winamp which just sits there and refuses to play anything!media player wont recognise that a music cd is inserted, it simply comes up with 'pleas insert music cd' in the playlist combo box. Forcing media player to play one of the tracks (by dragging and dropping them into the media player window) results in the error 'Invalid MCI device ID. Use the ID retured when opening the MCI device'. No idea what this means, the only reference to it on the microsoft site is an unrelated problem with windows 98.
I've tried accessing the properties on the cd-rom and dvd drive and disabled/enabled didgital audio cd, but this has no effect..
I've downloaded the latest codecs from the microsoft site, and this had no effect... I've tried just about all my cd's and NONE of them work!
this problem is driving me mad! please help, for the sake of my sanity!

How to Enable or Disable Automatically Running CD-ROMs
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q155217

chunk, its nothing to do with auto running the cd roms, its to do with not being able to play the music on the cd roms...
and besides, doesnt XP allow you set up auto play options in the device properties?

Have you actually checked the registry item mentioned in that Microsoft article? I had the same problem and was unable to play music cds with MusicMatch or Media Player. Once I set that registry value to 1 instead of 0 and rebooted, everything went back to normal.

yeah, i've looked at the registry and everything is as it should be... still no music from me cd's though :(

Weird problem. This is a pretty lame idea but how about reinstalling Winamp and then check Winamp Prefernces option for it to autoplay music cd's?
You can also check CD Rom properties in device manger and make sure the Enable Digital Audio box is checked (although I think that's a wate of time in this case)
Damn, it's not even my problem and I'm going nuts trying to figure out what it could be.
Sorry I don't have any better ideas.

One thing I remember now that may help is this. Even though Autoplay can be enabled and disabled through the registry, certain applications offer to do the same thing, except that they do it with different methods.
I once chose through several tweaking programs to turn off auto play. Bad part was several months later, I wanted to re-enable auto-play, but it would not because it was switched off in several differnet ways. I finally realized that I had to go back to each of the tweaking progrmas that I had used and reverse the options I had made months earlier. This may not solve your problem but perhaps it wil give you an idea?
Really wish I could come up with something more. Hang in there.
How about doing a Repair if all else fails? Ugh!! I feel so low for suggesting that.

well finally sorted out the problem!.. decided to see if windows wanted to repair my installation.. accidently clicked install (upgrade) and before I knew it the bloody thing was installing windows all over again.
to my surpirse though, windows still registers that all the software is still installed and ready to go... everything works, better than ever infact.. I can once again play music cds AND my dvd player plays dvds without jerking and stopping and stuff..
the words two, birds and stone come to mind.. well done micro$oft, you've done something right for a change! :)
Closure.
