Didn't you mentioned in your other post HERE that you cannot access "windows mode" (whatever it is)? Care to clarify the discrepancies?

Sorry, I am writing this from my second home PC. My other problem PC goes until the wallpapaer then it stops loading (no icons appear, I can only press control alt delete and restart or shut down)...

So you have three machines? One mentioned in your first post, the one mentioned here, and the one you're using to post the help requests?

Yes, one laptop (from which I am posting now) another desktop and yet another desktop which has the problem...

So, is the problem computer the same one you referred to in the link XPUser provided? If so, why did you post another thread? If not, you should clarify in the other post exactly what you mean by Windows Mode. (And, there is no DOS in Windows XP.) When did this problem start? What did you do immediately preceding the trouble?

Yes, both posts (the one here and under viruses and security) relate to the same PC - my apologies.

A short history to my problem: Before I got wireless Internet yesterday, the PC worked fine. (except for that it was randomly trying to access the Internet)

Yesterday, when I inserted a the wireless device (which links this PC with the wireless Internet network) the desktop items (icons, start bar - everything disappeared - leaving ONLY the wallpaper back) I can only see the clean wallpaper when I start-up. I can, however (as I have in the mean time figured out) press Control Alt Delete and restart, shutdown and access a number of programs through the Task Manager application.

I have undergone an AVG anti-virus scan yesterday and found one or two trojans, they were successfully removed: no change...

I have also completed a repait installation of XP: no success...

Thx for the time.

Start with seeing if you can enter safe mode on bootup. This is done by holding down the F8 key before the windows logo appears after powering on.

With the repair of xp, are they the same symptoms?

Taskbar and Icons missing:

Try this:

(Original Message, and Response Number 1 looks like a fix?)

Also try this:
http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/...
and
http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/...
(That one is a special Posting someone made of how he fixed it.)

Another fix is un-quarintene explorer in Spydoctor.

Thanks so much for all the info! explorer.exe is not starting and Microsoft support does not include a solution for this. As I have mentioned, I have completed a virus scan and a complete repair of XP. What can I do to get explorer back? Must I run Windows Defender? Thanks for any further help!

I have some more possibly relevant info: The explorer.exe application seems to open and close. The result is that the desktop shows for a few second then disappears and then shows again...

Run the repair of the OS, and if you want to use the wireless, make sure you install the software before installing the card.
