OS: Win XP
CPU/Ram: 1.6 Ghz/504 RAM
Product: Toshiba Tecra
Comment:

I have a Toshiba Tecra A3, which apparently uses Realtek (AC 97) Audio system. (This is a laptop/notebook)

I have no sound, I have no volume icon in the active programs tray. Under Sounds and Audio devices properties… "no audio device."

I do get the system beep. I have gone through the windows troubleshooting guide and did everything I could. Downloaded new drivers off Toshiba site and installed and restarted…nothing still.

I believe the fact that the driver is not "started" is an important issue.

use the 'Fn' key and 'Mute' or 'volume up/down' on the keyboard

Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > Sound, Video and game controllers. See if the Audio drivers are installed ok with no error indications.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

"Have you bothered to read the Manual??"

I have found nothing about "starting" a driver in the "manual."

Under settings and device manager I read :your hardware is installed and ready to use. But it also says, Sound driver is enabled but has not been started.

Thank you for the input and advice to "backup!"

I should mention that I have had the computer specialist for the company I work for spend over an hour investigating this on the computer and he came up without a remedy. So, just maybe it could be something obvious still, but I would be surprised.

I am hoping someone has gone through this situation and found the solution.

i found this:

'I experienced the audio problem "Driver is enabled but has not been started" on XP and also got the "Digital output in use by another application" from my onboard soundapp. This problem was due to the Plug and Play Software enumerator not running.

The solution is described at http://www.annoyances.org/exec/foru... and I repeat the brief version below (you need to reinstall the driver swenum.sys but first you must create a .inf file for it):

"copy machine.inf from %windir%\inf to a temp dir
remove line 20: ExcludeFromSelect=*
add new hardware have disk (select the temp dir with the modified machine.inf) and install the plug and play software enumerator" '

Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'
