If the instructions above that fit your problem say you have to boot from a cd, you have to be sure the bios is set to boot from cd 1st.

Keep in mind, you are in a righ risk situation , anything can happen, if you don't have backups of your important stuff, including emails & address book, take the drive out & Slave your HD to another HD/comp ( no need to bolt it in, just cable it & leave it outside the case ) & copy your stuff ( don't forget your emails & address book ) onto the other HD or other media.
You may have a choice of jumper settings on the master HD, such as master with slave or ms.

Now put it back in your comp, once again, no need to bolt it in at this stage ( change the jumper, back to where it was )

XP Home Repair Install
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/win...
Startup your comp, with a Boot disc or Startup disk in the floppy drive (without cd rom support)
At the A: prompt, type > sys c: and then press ENTER.
Take out the boot disk ( Make sure you change the bios to boot from CD 1st ) and then "Repair" XP by booting from the XP CD and selecting Install > Repair (NOT recovery console) > Fast Repair.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run WINNT.exe in the I386 folder on the CD)

Ok, eMachines have their own recovery cd with all the drivers included.

The manual, which comes with the comp or is available here.

http://www.emachine-upgraders.info/...

http://www.emachine-upgraders.info/...

Gives this info on how to Enter Setup ( should also be on the bottom of your startup screen, hit the Pause button, during boot. Down the bottom of the screen is the info on what key to press to enter Setup, if your's gets that far )

Entering Setup
Power on the computer and the system will start POST (Power On Self Test)
process. When the message below appears on the screen, press <DEL> key to
enter Setup.
Press DEL to enter SETUP
If the message disappears before you respond and you still wish to enter Setup,
restart the system by turning it OFF and On or pressing the RESET button.
You may also restart the system by simultaneously pressing <Ctrl>, <Alt>,
and <Delete> keys.

If, as I suspect, you cannot do this, take the HD out & recover your info.

Good news, good chance now to practice getting into the bios ( setup ) & checking if that pause button works & if the boot from cd 1st is OK.
