you have underestimated my ignorance!! what is PS2 and can you give me an example of other usb devices (i have a digital camera lead and my broadband modem attached -- I think to usb sockets, is that what you mean?) sorry to be dim! (On the advice of Packard Bell I updated the BIOS but that doesn't seem to have helped)

you said that your mouse and keyboard were plugged into usb, do you kno what usb looks like? PS2 is round and usually what your keyboard and mouse plug into, it is normally below the power supply, most companies make both ps2's different colors
usb is rectangular
here check out this site for pics and tell me how your stuff is plugged in

Hey great -- I understand that!!
the set up is as follows: the mouse and keyboard are ?radio linked to a receiver, which is plugged into a usb socket. On the front of the base unit are 2 more usb sockets : modem plugged into one, cable for camera in the other. There are 2 round ps2 sockets on the base unit as well but I don't use them (one for keyboard the other for mouse by the look of them)
I haven't changed any of this setup and it all worked OK until recently

thanks for your patience

don't know! should I try it? One problem is that cos my keyboard doesn't work when I get the choice screen I can't select which mode to try to start up in. I could try to plug my son's keyboard in -- that has a ps2 plug. I think when it gets to that screen the default choice is normal and it does eventually start and then I can unplug the receiver and plug it back into the usb and it then usually works. Just before I see that choice screen a blue screen flashes by with some writing on it, which probably gives info on the problem but it comes and goes too fast to see what it says

Your cordless keyboard and mouse run on batteries? Have you checked them?

the text on the screen that eventually comes up is as follows:
We apologise for the inconvenience. Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly or was automatically shut down to protect your file and folders, choose last know good configuration to revert to the latest settings that worked. If a previous start up attempt was interrupted due to a power failure of because the Power or Reset button was pressed of it you aren’t sure what caused the problem chose Start Windows normally

[then there is the choice of starting in]

Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with good command prompt
Last known good condiguration

Start Windows normally [this is what is highlighted by default]

Use up and down arrows to choose

what happens then is it tries to start Windows normally and the whole thing goes round and round until eventually it starts. When it does start I often get that error message that says windows has recovered from a serious problem (or something) and says I can send an error report.
The error report is full of things like BCCode at BCP1: 0000000C
BCP2: 00000002
BCP3: 00000000
BCP4 804EA2D2
OSVer: 5_1_2600
SP: 1_0 product 768_1

there are 2 files in the report
c:\windows\minidump\mini091504.01.dmp
and c:\docume~1\barbara\locals~1\temp\wer\wer3.tmp.dir00\systdata.xml

These might as well be in Martian for all that they mean to me, but maybe they have significance and will reveal all! I have run my virus checker and scanned for Trojans and worms and all sorts, no luck there.

ok, so you can boot into windows normally? when do you get the blue screen?
it does give some significance and that is the systdata.sml is causing some issues, is that the file you execute and then you get the bluescreen?
if i were you, while in windows i would delete my temporary internet file with the link as follows
c:\documents and setting\local settings (if you do not have this folder go to "tools" up to by "file" and go to folder options, go to the veiw tab, and show hidden system files and folder, and uncheck the two underneith the folder will then be displayed) \ within the local settings folder, look for temp &/or temporary internet files, delete both folders, if you cannot a certain file within the folder, boot into safe mode and try to delete them

Thanks for this Josh. I will try it. This morning however, this happened. I unplugged all my usb devices before I tried to start (modem, keyboard/mouse receiver) then the computer started perfectly! Then I tried to plug in the modem and the computer shut down and went into the same problem cycle of start up! This is what happens:
1 Packard Bell screen (is now grey but used to be blue) with options of switch screen [esc] BIOS [F2] Boot [f8]
2 Windows screen
3 flash of blue screen with writing, too fast to see (can I somehow "freeze" this screen so I can read it?)
4 Packard Bell Screen
5 Long wordy screen with choice of start up, count down to 20 seconds before it tries again, then back to 2 above and so on until it eventually starts up
I did think I had tried to delete my temp internet files before but I will give it another go
The other thing that happened when I eventually started up this morning is that the error message (with slighly different files names in it) directed me to a page of Simpli Spftware cos it said there was an error in CD recording device (whatever that is!) and I had to update the AFS/AFS2K driver, but I don't know which application this driver uses. I have recently updated Realplayer, don't know if that has anything to do with it

Hi Josh
don't know why this should happen now. I've had this modem for a few months and it has been fine. Why should it suddenly start causing problems? How do I run it through ethernet? Could this also be the cause of my keyboard/mouse problem? Many thanks, I really appreciate all your help
