Odd, before I tried 5 I'd try a restore point.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

You must have zillions of saved links.

Dave S.

The problem can also be caused by installing ATI video related software in the wrong order, or installing it without having un-installed a previous version of the same first.

If your problem is caused by video related software, in that case, Windows will load in Safe mode or Enable VGA mode fine, but of course the graphics will be plain VGA.
You often cannot Un-install software in Safe mode, but you always can in Enable VGA mode.

G'day Tubesandwires, I do have a pretty big database, but mostly use Google. The link I provided came up straight away & had the line "After you log on to Windows XP, you cannot see the Start button or the taskbar" in it, so I thought it was a good starting point.

Thanks to all that replied. Downloaded software from reimage, shut down last night and rebooted this morning and all is working like before.
