Hi

My PC recently caught a virus which is Spyguard 2008. Now, whenever I turn on my PC, it loads as far as the login password sometimes, but no further. It enters 'sleep mode' and resets over and over.

Please advise on what I could do to cure this.

Thanks in advance!
Richard

If you are on DSL or cable, try booting into safe mode with networking (tap the f8 key on bootup)
If you can get into safe mode, go on-line and download Avast Free, execute the file and allow it to do a bootscan on reboot. Move all it finds to the chest.
Then I would suggest you run the free cleaners listed in my signature and remove all they find.
Please post back on how you make out...Good Luck

Thank you very much for your reply!

I have managed to choose the option 'safe mode with networking' but all that happens is there is a blank screen (black) with 'safe mode' in each corner and small writing at the top about microsoft. I really don't understand what to do and I am at a loss now. Pressing the mouse does nothing as does the keyboard.

are you waiting long enough for the desktop to come up? If it gets to the stage you are saying, the desktop should eventually appear.

Oh I see. How long do you have to wait for the desktop to show?

Tap F8, select Safe Mode (without networking), follow the removal instructions:

http://www.spywareremove.com/remove...

You don't need to download any software...just follow that manual removal instructions.

Thanks!

I have already tried 'safe mode' (without networking) and all I get is my computer goes into sleep mode and restarts and the process starts again. It's annoying but I will give your link a look.

Thanks again for all your help!

ok, try unchecking automatically restart when you go into safemode, with or without networking.
That way you will get a message when your PC crashes. Please list the exact error message that comes up

I have now managed to get to the desktop but it completely freezes when I am there. I will keep you informed on what happens next.

I am unable to reach anything but on the rare occasion I got to IE, there was no connection.

It seems I now have had some certain messages come up. They are specifically :

"Explorer.exe bad image".

"The application or DLL C://windows\microsoft.netframework\v2.0 50727mscorie.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your windows installation diskette".

"The system has recovered from a serious error. A log of this error has been created. Please tell microsoft about this problem. We have created an error report that you can send us to improve microsoft windows. We will treat this problem as confidential and anonymous"

"Spooler subsystems app encountered a problem and needed to close".
