spoolsv.exe behaving like trojan

In my case spoolsv.exe was using about 99% cpu usage and slowing the machine dramatically. It turned out to be a queue of 6 documents waiting to print to the mysterious "Microsoft Office Document Displaywriter" printer. This "printer" seems to be a standard installation of Office 2003. The machine was behaving as if it was infected by a trojan (ie slow, lots of network traffic when not doing anything, and spoolsv.exe grabbing lots of CPU) Does anyone know about this Displaywriter printer driver which doesn't appear to do anything?

Nigel, Firstly, Spoolsv.exe is a requirement to print out anything at all even if you are not networked. However, you should block this process through the firewall thus only allowing it to print locally.
Next, Displaywriter was or still is an IBM printer/word processor type of typewriter if memory serves. It may well be a "dummy" printer like the sort installed by ADOBE PDF maker, or an OCR software. Why there were files waiting to be printed to it is a mystery. However, make sure it has not been accidentally made the DEFAULT. I have inadvertantly sent files to a "dummy" printer of this type in the past and then wondered why my PC had "hung up"!
