Hiya all.
Got an interesting issue on a laptop. Every time that we attempt to install a printer we get a problm where spool.exe takes up about 97-99% of CPU and slows down the pc to a crawl.
It looks like a virus but norton cannot detetct it. We ultimately kill spool.exe and pc speeds back up.
Now i have looked for rapidblaster spyware and it is not there. I have tried unsuccessfully to find a virus on this laptop too.

You've got spyware installed on your system.
Ad-aware and spybot are free and should do the job.
Ensure you update to the latest definitions before running a full scan. Good luck. TF

spoolsv.exe hogging 99% of cpu - the fix http://torque.oncloud8.com/archives/000384.html I came into lab to find the printer printing strange ASCII characters, one line per page, and a basically inoperably slow PC. Checking Task Manager, I found the culprit - one spoolsv.exe at 99% cpu which I killed. About 30 seconds later, the cpu was once again clogged by a revived app. Here's the fix. First, get some breathing room - go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and stop the Print Spooler. Turn off the printer. Now go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS and delete the files there. I found '00020.SHD' and '00020.SPL'. Now turn your printer back on and restart the service. Check task manager, spoolsv.exe should be at 00%. Whew!

Anton, spoolsv.exe is ok but spool.exe is not. Just Google spool.exe to see.I believe Spybot S&D got rid of it on a friends computer as TechFobe said.I had it a while ago, before most programs picked up on it and it was very tough to get rid of. Good Luck
