Hello,

First off, specs:
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-7IXE4
CPU: AMD Duron 757 Mhz
RAM: 192 MB
Video: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440
HDD1: WDC WD200EB-11CPF0
HDD2: WDC WD400BB-00DKA0

My problem is that I am getting spontaneous resets (as if the reset button was pressed) at random times. Sometimes it happens when I first get in to Windows, other times the PC can be running for an hour before it decides to reset.

I am also getting a lot of blue screen errors, which have included the following:

* BAL_POOL_HEADER
* IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL
* win32k.sys
* DRIVER_IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL - afd.sys

I've read that the IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL error could be to do with sound card drivers. My sound card is built on to my motherboard, so I don't know if I can update the sound drivers.

I've also updated to the latest version of my video card drivers and this hasn't helped the problem.

My CPU fan sometimes runs a little bit slow and causes it to overheat (I ran Motherboard Manager 5 to test the temperature), so I've got the side of my PC case off and have a desk fan blasting at it to cool it down. This seems to work.

I suspect it could be my power supply playing up.

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated, thank you.

That first blue screen error should read "BAD_POOL_HEADER" not "BAL_POOL_HEADER".

right click on my computer and go to manage. click on event viewer and then click on system and see what error code comes up and input it into google. Microsoft may have a solution. Also you might need to replace your fan on your mother board or buy a air blaster which you can clean out your computer. Their maybe dust from keeping the fan running at optimal speeds. Also you might try to google speedfan download to check your fan speeds.

Yes, replace the CPU fan. You don't have to replace the heatsink, just the fan. The fan normally is held on the heatsink by a few screws.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!!!

Sounds like the power supply to me. Had the same problem after fitting a RAID and 2GB of RAM. Thought it was initially the memory overheating as it seemed to happen when the case started to heat-up. After unplugging a some of the HDDs the system remained stable. Replaced the PSU with a Vantec Stealth VAN-520A and the problem went away. In my case I was pulling too many amps, suspect in your case the PSU maybe spiking.
Hope this helps.
