I would like to know if anyone out there knows of any good ways to speed up a 56K connection. Right now, I already have made some tweaks to my system (including downloading NetExcelerator 1.10); but it has taken approx. 53 minutes to download a 13.5 meg file. I mainly surf forums sites and weather-related sites when I am on the Net. I also do a lot of downloading. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Have u tried marketscore? It's SUPPOSED to make your internet a lil faster and stay connected more stabley (is that a word?). I had to go through a long stupid process but mehbe u could try it.

53 minute for a 13.5mb file really isnt that bad. I just might be that you have pushed your modem to its limit.

Before you consider using Marketscore (also known as Netsetter) use the search tool at the top of this page and you'll find that it causes a lot of problems. I agree with Jeremy that your download speed is OK.

Here are the results of a test off of a speed testing site: (I have censored my IP address for obvious reasons)

Test Number: 1
Test Type: Download 25 Kilobytes
Your IP address: ***.***.**.***
Data used today: 0 bytes
Maximum usage: 512000 bytes
Data remaining: 512000 bytes
Bytes Transferred: 25600 bytes
Download time: 2.047 seconds
Throughput: 100.0 Kilobits per second (kbps)
= 12.5 Kilobytes per second (kBps)

Test Number: 2
Test Type: Upload 25 Kilobytes
Your IP address: ***.***.**.***
Data used today: 25600 bytes
Maximum usage: 512000 bytes
Data remaining: 486400 bytes
Bytes Transferred: 25600 bytes
Upload time: 1.109 seconds
Throughput: 184.6 Kilobits per second (kbps)
= 23.0 Kilobytes per second (kBps)

Would you say that is average or not?

I would say that is above average for a 56k modem.

13.5MB in 53min is pretty good for a 56k connection.

You can't tell your download speed by a 25 Kilobyte file,it's to small anytime you download a it always starts out fast and then slows. My "256K" DSL only downloads at 24 to 28 kilobytes per second but when it starts out it might be 50 or 60 for a few moments. Go to http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
and they have you download a 1 megabyte file and that will give you a more accurate test. I agree with the other people that 53 minites is not bad for a 13.5 MB file. If you have a good line the typical download speed is between 5 and 7 kilobytes a second and having an extra program running on your PC won't help that much and might accually slow it down.

That's pretty good, when I had 56k mine always ran about 33,000 on those and other tests. I would say you don't have a problem at all it sounds like you have a very healthy internet connection.

I agree with the above comments. It appears that you have a very good connection. The other thing that sped up my connection was going to an external modem, but other than that,it looks like your connection is very good.

Is that your average? Any download manager? Download speed depends on your modem, the source of the file, your ISP, and which download manager you use. If that is your average performance without using any download manager, you are having a very good connection. Use a good download manager will boost your download even more. Now I am using Flashget and it seems to run fine. For a good site which support multiple download, I just got 24,187 KB for 53 mins. Sometimes more and sometimes less, depends on the source. The best performance I had so far for 56K modem is having 10+ kb/s for hours using a older donwload manager (not compatible with IE6) with my college account. But download manager might slow down your download if the website doesn't allow multiple login, so beware and disable it. Choose "shareware" when you install Flashget, otherwise it will install the "adware". Getright is good, too. Don't use download accelerator plus as it contains "spyware" and it mess up your system after you remove it. Don't know any serious bug about Flashget as I haven't use it for a long time, but so far so good.
