speakers on mic setting?

Hi all, I recently got new speakers but I can't seem to get them to work. The first time I hooked them up to my laptop the pop-up that accompanies plug-and-play devices appeared, the one that asked what you want to do with the device or whatnot. Well, I said to use it as a microphone because I am a dummy, and now I get no sound from the speakers. If I am playing music via the internal laptop speakers everything is fine, but as soon as I plug the speakers into the laptop I don't get anything. I am positive that everything is hooked up correctly and the volume is up and all that. Thanks for your help.
