I can't find a simple program to span, say, 900MB across ( in this case TWO) CDs.
Why not use a DVD you may well ask?

My typical situation is send holiday Photos to my grown up kids. Send details of a project, send chapters of a book that I'm writing...
...things that might at most occupy three CDs.

At the moment I go to the folder where the bits and pieces are. I select 650MB, sometimes after a lot of trial and error. I mark those by hand. I let the burner program do its job and mark the CD that pops out on the tray CD as Vicky1 or something like that.
Then I go back to my piece of paper where I listed the previously burned files and selected from the remainder in the folder another 650MB. Burn again, Vicky2.
And then etc until none are left.

Surely there must be a simple CD spanning program to do the above.
Difficulty none, time saving enormous as the file juggling to get just less than the 650MB prepared for burning, then the listing so as not to duplicate is tedious.

This sort of program ideally should use no zipping nor file splitting
because those schemes if I remember from the good old floppy days were prone to total failure. If one of the disks was faulty you lost all your information.
The program I have in mind should be simpler,....
its properties, or virtues:-

Each CD has a set of complete non-zipped files. If one CD of the set becomes faulty then in no way can it a affect the others.

Also as the "dud" CD only contains complete individual files, then there are many programs capable of recovering from them all the files that were not damaged by the fault condition .

Any Ideas Chaps as to where I can find a simple CD spanner?

Bye and Thanks
Fred

Windows XP builtin CD burning utility is a no-frill burner which means it won't do what you want it to do. I believe Nero or Roxio may have what is known as "serviceable backup utility" to span burn CDs. Google for it or else replace your CD burner for DVD burner & burn them all at once to DVDs.

That was a surprise Ewen, nice to hear from you. With my time slot, I usually find most questions answered.

Back in the days of floppies, there were programs for doing just what you are looking for. The old floppies held a lot less than the CD's of today, so it was needed then too. I don't recall the names of any of them, but maybe cnet or major geeks, would have something like it, updated for CD's.

I think using the XP Backup utility would just give you the kind of 'Spanning' where you have to insert the CD's in order, and if one get's scratched they are all trashed.

You need a program that will sort the files into groups, based on size, that will fit onto a single CD. Then, you simply select the groups, one by one, to burn onto the CD.

I have to believe that someone, somewhere, has seen the need and solved the problem, probably with a Freeware program. I strongly believe in Freeware. Does anyone know of a prgram that can do this?

Good luck. I'll be watching, too.

A positive attitude won't solve all your problems, but it will annoy just enough people to be worth the effort.

Dear PCbob
Yes, this is a really unsophisticated application that is needed.

Clearly we need an empty CD to start and a burner program
I break it into 4 parts.

1. Select 650MB of files
2. Activate the burner and burn
3. Swap burned CD for new empty CD
4. Eliminate the burned files from the list

Repeat 1,2,3,4 until no files are left .

There is no program that I know of to remove and replace the CDs at the end of each recording.

You might check out delphi32.com. I tried but it said server too busy. maybe later. They have a file spanner. It has possibilities. The DVD Spanner I found turns out to be only for Mac systems.

By golly, there HAS to be something, somewhere, that will do what you need. Either that, or it's time for us to switch to a DVD burner.

Don't give up, tho.

Good luck.

Thanks PC Bob,
we all agree that the application is really simple. A small sort routine into lots of 650 then moving fingers to replace CDs. The computer does the rest.

But where is it, the longed for grail?

Bye Fred

PS I wouldn't lose much sleep on it. I'll write it when I have some time,
huh!

Yes, I agree include the printer.
