I am at my wits end on this one. Something happened today on my desktop at home, and it's driving me nuts. Something happened and I had some viruses, which my anti-virus program (Clam-AV), and since then, everytime I would press the space bar, the system would drop down into stanby mode.... Making the spacebar key like a sleep button.
Now I was able to avoid this by disabling the standby altogether, but now my spacebar key doesn't work at all!

Have you rebooted? "So won’t you give this man his wings
What a shame
To have to beg you to see
We’re not all the same
What a shame" - Shinedown
Oh yeah, many times!
ok, I decided to install windows vista, thinking this would solve the problem. No dice. even after re-installing a brand new OS, the spacebar activates the standby!!!
what kind of keyboard do you have usb or ps2? did you do a full system reformat or did you "upgrade?" shoulda tried avg and malware-bytes. however now it sounds liek a driver problem, possibly in the keyboard. im guessing a usb keyboard? and a fancy one at that?
I really don't know why someone would reformat if their keyboard wasn't working the way it should. Have you tried other keyboards yet? Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers
It's a standard PS2 keyboard. The thing is... I know the spacebar key works! Because if I re-activate the standby functionality, the spacebar puts the computer to sleep everytime i press it.
Oh, and I did a complete re-install of windows... Mind you I didn't reformat the disk prior, but it wasn't an upgrade...
I'm still not able to use the spacebar. I reset the Power Configuration options completely to go back to defaults. No dice, now the standby comes into effect as soon as I press the spacebar again. Where is it in Windows that we can set what keep acts as the standby key?
go into device manager and delete the driver for keyboard. then reinstall it maybe?
ok, uninstalled the keyboard driver. Asked me to reboot, it re-installed the PS2 driver. Still didn't work. I went to the logitech website to download their driver, re-installed, still doesn't work.
There's got to be something mapping the spacebar to the sleep key, I checked out a few sites with respect to checking the policies & power configuration, but I couldn't find anyone with the same problem as me.
I tried deleting the keyboard layouts in the regional settings too. damn, this problem is a PITA.
I don't know if it means anything, but I can remote desktop into the machine from my laptop, and the spacebar works just fine from there... Another thought I had was that there may be some form of shortcut being used to map the spacebar somehow?
Have you tried that keyboard on another machine or someone else's on yours?
It sounds like there is some sort of short circuit inside it.some other bloke...
The OP obviously doesn't think it's his keyboard because he's not willing to try another one. Keyboards are real cheap anymore, around $7 at Big Lots and Goodwill and Salvation Army sell used ones for $1. Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers
ok. replaced the keyboard and it worked.
Cool, thanks for posting back. Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers
