I've received notification thru windows update that SP3 is available. Haven't done anything yet, just wondering if this update is really necessary. My computer is running smooth right now, sure don't want to mess it up, especially any programs.

Also, can this update be uninstalled (should something go wrong)and still keep SP2?

Thanks for any advice

Well, SP3 is an optional update and also a cumulative update that consolidated 1,174 bug fixes since XP SP2. IMO I don't believe SP3 will be a problematic update as SP2 was for some people. I believe you can uninstall it if something don't go right, particularly with some third-party applications and utilities. Perhaps the link below will help you make an informed decision whether or not you want to install it at this time

It does create an 'uninstall folder', so I guess it can be removed.

I'm not fussing over it.

But that's me.

Medion MIM 2080
Toshiba T2130CT
Macintosh Performa 450

All working wonderfully.

It's still early in the game but I've read a few posts on a few help forum sites that problems are surfacing. No boots, etc.

I'd wait a while before installing.

It's a good day when you learn something

Thanks, I think I'll pass on it for a while and see if any bugs need to worked out.

Just to add my own experience about this morning update to SP3 (Italian edition I did not expect to be available till June).

No problems at all and it can be uninstalled. Just beware the update requires a quite long installation time (I have an optical fiber broadband connection).

According to M$ article (CLICK ME), you can uninstall XP SP3 using any one of the following three methods:

1. Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel,

2. System Restore process, or

3. Recovery Console.

One thing to be aware of is that if you are running IE6 you cannot uninstall IE7 or IE8 Beta without having to first uninstall XP SP3. Refer to following link for more info.

Also there is another issue that concerns the Address toolbar. XP SP3 removed it on purpose. See following article for M$ explanation of "regulatory agency".

Installed not via updates but a download and lost all three of my printers connected via usb. Couldn`t get any of them to re-install and had to system restore to point before i installed sp3. On this dell it disagreed with the update. Back to sp2 for now. Re-installed these printers countless times and sp3 didn`t want any part of it.
