Put SP3 on a hd and it will not allow me on to this site. Probably has to do with something on this site as it is the only one it denies.

I'm guessing MS wants to quit supporting IE6 so SP3 may force migration to 7. Just a guess as I said.

It is a problem with URLMON.DLL. It seems to see some thing on this site it doesn't like and denies access.

SP3 is BETA and M$ state it is not to be used unless one wants to take the plunge and maybe have a non-working XP.

I am 1 million times positive that per knew that too damn well :-)

Hey per can you sum up what's the problem in a different narrative - I'm not sure I follow your original explanation.

Hi XpUser. Yeh-Testing SP3 beta. On this site IE6 gives the "has encountered a problem and must close". It only seems to be on CN.I suspect it is an active-x from one of the advertisers. I will trouble shoot more later. I think I may have to replace the urlmon.dll file. It may also be a host file problem so I will clean the host file. I only posted this to alert other people of the possible problem. With SP3 release imminent I decided to see what problems may occur. So far this is the only one but I am sure windows has other surprises in store for us.

Don't blame you. This is for myself and any others who may run into problems. I don't worry about it as I just slide the other hdd in and I am right back to SP2.

I don't even use auto update. I wait for a few days for others to beta test the latest updates.

I don't use auto update either. I think you are missing the point here. This is a beta TEST!!

I didn't miss the point. I am saying I am so cautious that in addition to not touching beta releases I don't even get regular updates until others have tried them out. Get it?

Yeh, but I fail to see the relevance to the post other than your personal preferences. Did I miss something?

I guess you did. Updates can carry a certain amount of risk too. Same principle, different level. There is a current post here where the OP is having issues with IE6 since last tuesday's update for IE6.

Just some back ground Othehill. I have been on this forum for at least 6 years as a helper. I really don't need a tutorial on the dangers of updates, etc. Thx for the input.

I never suggested you aor anyone else do anything.

I don't know what your problem is but you seem to want to pick a fight.

I'm done with this thread.

It appears OtheHill may have hit on the answer. I installed IE7 and so far no problems. It appears IE6 and urlmon.dll ver. 6.0.2900.3244 dont play well together. Other than that if anyone really cares SP3 sems to be a viable update.
Going back to SP2 and IE6 now.

I installed SP3 RC and it runs perfectly. But I also have IE7 installed months ago.

In my opinion, people should not be too scary to install updates and/or release candidate software. This is the path to technological progress. And one can only learn if one lives real-world problem.

If you have a problem with a software, you try to solve it. This teaches you more things than you can ever learn by reading or studying.
