SP3 install: Access Denied

April 15, 2010 at 13:52:28
Specs: Windows XP Pro SP2, 3 Ghz, 2G
I have tried to install XP SP3 several times. I have tried disabling anti-virus, and even tried Safe Mode. In all cases the install proceeds smoothly for a while but then stops with "Access Denied". Does anyone have any suggestions for a fix?

My guess is that some file or registry key has had it's file permissions changed to remove admin from full control. As to how or why I can't say.

See event logs maybe for a clue or there may be some other log or file.

Thanks jefro and aegis1. It turned out to be permissions. I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377 as suggested and used Method 1 under Advanced Troubleshooting. That is: I downloaded and installed Subinacl.exe , copied, pasted and saved the script provided and double-clicked on the resuting file. It took a long while to run and seemed to have succeeded in changing only about four items. But ... that was enough, and the installation completed.

Thanks again for the help.
