Since installing SP3 I am unable to upgrade RAM, if I put new ram in slots, the laptop will not start, it goes into continous reboot loop, the only way to stop it is to remove battery and mains, I have tried different sticks of ram, it is not un- compatable.it is the right spec.
have no help from MS or Hp.
many thanks in advance
pit

Just uninstall XP SP3 via Add/Remove Program or use System Restore to the time before you installed XP SP3. If you had browsed Forums & blogs on Windows across the internet, you would have noticed that XP Sp3 appears to be more problematic for many users. The problem you have may not be worth fixing until M$ address it. Until then the list of problems related to XP SP3 is growing.

How about a little more detail about the RAM you're trying? Is it DDR PC2700 or DDR PC3200 512 or less per slot?
Life's more painless for the brainless.

Go here--- http://h18000.www1.hp.com/
then click Product Support Information,
then enter in your exact Model name, and number,
then tick what information you want to know,
then proceed from there. You may find the Specifications List of what's in your computer.

With all dew respect chuck2, unable to get that infomation from hp as it uses a detection software, the laptop does not work.

Your laptop takes PC2700, max of 512MB per slot:

SP3 has nothing to do with your problem.

I trusted the seller that it was the right spec, other help forums agreed it was the right spec. This has been going on for 3 weeks.

hi
i dont normally bother with laptops but having seen similar issue this week worth a post?
you need to know what spec your laptop really is, theres alot of 2100 versions around
seems older ones can take 2100 ram.
check the list here
http://www.memoryx.net/269085b25.htmlre: jennifer & jam , im not sure about higher rated ram clocking down on laptops, does it?
that rebooting issue was supposed to be an amd problem i have here a new intel desktop doing exactly the same, works fine without sp3 :/

SP3 obviously doesn't come into play until you boot into Windows. The OP wrote "if I put new ram in slots, the laptop will not start". If he can't even boot up with the new RAM, SP3 is NOT the problem.
Crucial lists PC2700 & PC3200 as the only options for the Presario 2100 laptop...I would go with their recommendation.

What happens if you remove the new RAM & just use the original?

It want run with the old 2x256 mb ram.
From the advice I have had so far and the history of MS, Can anyone remember when microsoft provented there system from working or regestering if you changed the hardware in your machine, anything HD, DVD,I ask myself is it because I have tried to change the ram/ ok be it the wrong spec, but i have tried different ram and the old.
I was told on another forum that this is a well known problem with service pack 3 AMD processors. if it was the ram alone why would it have run with the old ram until the second clean install and reinstall of SP3. I have no ram left to try again of any kind, MS told me to install the intelppm string into regestry and change the value to 4, since that nothing reboot loop.pit

As jam said, SP3 doesn't even come into play until you're booting into Windows, and you're not even getting that far. I do RAM updates on Laptops all the time, and they are a finicky bunch.
You HAVE to have the right RAM EXACTLY. Sometimes the same RAM from a different manufacturer will not work. You have to go with the Specific RAM Manufacturer that your Laptop maker recommends.
As far as "all the other forums" telling you something, well, that why we come here :)

Sometimes edge connector oxide can play up when you have been making changes. Use a pencil eraser on the edge connectors and pop the sticks in and out a few times to ensure the sockets are cleaned.
some other bloke...

Thankyou for the info derek, I am waiting for new ram to arrive, having troble getting my money back from the first guy.
When it arrives I will give it a try cant harm anything.pit
