hey, im having major trouble. I just got a new dell pc a month ago, i had a lot of junk on there that i didnt want anymore so i decideed to reinstall windows. i have XP service pack 2. after installing, it did not do what it normally does were you get this welcome to windows message and you set users and everythin up. instead it just automatically makes a user called owner. i then go in it and i cant go any higher than 640 X 480 resolution with 16 bit colour. what is happening. i have tried everything, and, as usual, troubleshooting didnt help much either

Can you clarify this for us? How did you reinstall Windeows? Did you use the disk that came with the new Dell? I thought Dell no longer supply a disc if your PC is manufactured after some date in July 2004.

i specifacally asked them on the phone to include the disk, it costed a little extra, but yes i did use the dell windows XP home edition SP2 disk. i changed my boot settings so that it boots from this disk first, then simply booted from the disk on start - up and went through formatting and the usual routine

Here's the deal. You bought a Dell. It has proprietary hardware and software installed at the factory. XP generic cd's do not have the Dell drivers. You may be able to install them from the Dell cd's that came with the machine. Good luck.

Did you install the drivers after installing Win XP?

The drivers come in a separate CD

I thought that dell used a hidden partiton to store the oem software. Ours came with a cd to just boot to and follow a few instructions and it was back to oem state.

Did they change that?

You have to hit CTRL F11 when the DELL logo appears.

Here, minicooper49 has reformatted the HD. So the hidden partition is gone. That option is no longer available.

The correct order for clean reinstallion of OS for Dell is:

1. Install Win XP SP2
2. Install Intel chipset driver
3. Reboot
4. Install other device drivers
5. Install ISP dialer
6. Do 'Windows Update' at Microsoft site
7. Install anti-virus software
8. Install applications

This may not be true. Format does not remove the hidden partition. You have to physically remove it using special utilities. minicooper49 made no mention of using such utility.

minicooper49,

If your "new" Dell is a Dimension and Inspiron systems and it was shipped to you or after July 15, 2004, there is a Dell PC Restore by Symantec built into it (CLICK ME for more info).

This page tells you how to run it. For example, when the Dell screen appears you have to press and hold the Ctrl key on the keyboard, press the F11 key, then release them both at the same time.

I believe that blueverine is correct. when I use the control f11 thingy, it pops up an error saying windows as failed to start up properly, i then choose safemode normal or any of those things. i called up dell and they told me i had a hidden partion and that i was supposed to unplug everything first and then do the restore thingy, now what they did is sent me a disk that contains all of that and reinstalls the hidden partion, from that partion it will reinstall or restore the drivers like you guys said. u guys have been a great help, thanks a bunch
