I installed SP2 from the CD with no problem, and the only problem I have had subsequently is in turning off the XP firewall (I use Sygate). Finally got that organized.
I am hardly an expert, but I feel you will eventually have to install SP2 to get future patches, etc. Not sure I like that, but I think that is the way this cookie will crumble.

I had just done a clean install of XP Pro and I went straight to windows update and downloaded SP2... it was a whopping 108 MB but didn't take long to download (3 mbps cable connection) I'd say I'm pretty happy with it, I like the popup blocker and better firewall, plus it saved me from having to download countless individual updates from windows update. I installed SP2 BEFORE I installed any of my personal software on the computer, so maybe this is why I've had no problems.

Lately I have been using a slipstreamed copy of SP2 on my XP installs. Works great. Saves downloading SP2 etc or loading additional patches after install. All of the installs I have done with SP2 have worked out great. I have read some horror stories about SP2 installs that went bad but I think that the computers in question had some serious issues prior to SP2 install. Lots of posts here and elsewhere about getting your system clean before you attempt to install SP2.

My recommendation is to clean up your system and go for it. You will eventually have to do it so might as well get on the wagon with the rest of us that have already taken the plunge.
