Hey
Here are some things i noticed with service pack 2. first off, it doesnt like all machines and hardware configurations, i had a guy over and redid 2 pcs (took 2 full nights) and did them how we liked them. when you boot up, the xp loading bar only goes once across then loads, hehe had it fast as, with a 2gh machine, better than my 3.2 ghz machine, till i did this one that is. anyway installed sp2 and totally crashed both of them. mine donesnt seem to mind it tho, but it IS going slower because of it, quite frankly, i dont think its worth the hassle of installing!
Heres my MAJOR ISSUE. i redid windows on my 2ghz processor machine, was doing it up for my mum then sending it off to her so shes got a nice one for her standards. anyway got it running nicely again, tried sp2 again, just in case, like to double check programs etc b4 i give them the flick. anyway my loading times for it then took AGES, xp loading bar, went through bout 8-9 cycles, tooo slow. anyway what the heck, i try UNINSTALLING sp2, as i archived files, wanted to test out. it then rebooted, only showed 128mb ram (has 756 or so). i rebooted again, my pc then tries to boot up, for 2 seconds, then switches itself off, the reboots and just sits there. nuthing at all comes up on the screen.
my theory is that because i uninstalled sp2, it somehow damaged my hardware in my pc! how can it do this? i tried another spare HD in there and does the same. i have to take in for repairs aswell now!
ANyway if u have any comments on wat i said or similar behaviour, let me know!

Hi,
Just at a glance, sounds like a hardware issue, not a software issue,I havent tried SP2 yet so my comment's about it dont count.Did you check to see that your Mother Board will support 756 mb ram,and is the ram the same speed and seated properly?

Your SP2 uninstall is apparently responsible. I doubt if it is a hdwe problem. Your best bet is to reformat and reinstall WinXP with SP1 and all your usual protection and see if the computer behaves as it did before. Pls let us know what happens.

thats the thing, i cant reinstall, i even tried putting in another hard drive, ever since i uninstalled sp2, i cant even start loading windows, or bios or anything for that matter. gores to start then switches off, then tries again then just hangs. had to pull power cable out of socket as cant even turn off by off button! anyway taking it in to get checked just in case!

Maybe too late, but don't do anything too drastic and have a read of a post I've posted elsewhere here today...
"you may not be alone.
Google something like 'mup.sys windows xp loop ' to see
Briefly, I found XP initially stalled completely at boot up for me, now it loops / restarts
So, to see if it's the same problem as mine (and many others), go to safe mode (keep pressing F8 as your pc is (trying) to boot up)
The last line of text on the screen should point you towards where XP gets into trouble
If you're looking at the last bit of that last line of text and it says "mup.sys" then you're in for some fun :(
I'd add it would best get a friend who knows what they're doing to have a look for you as it seems every one has a (different) opinion on this
Google 'mup.sys' and you should find lots of forums, read around the subject (or have your friend who knows what they're doing do it) before doing too much else
It appears no easy solution but the following could be helpful

and stuff like

But there's lots out there that appear to do their best to help
I say 'appear' as at the moment my pc is STILL looping, probably due to a USB mouse/keyboard (to be removed), problem motherboard (even though it's new), or the power supply...
Will bookmark this forum and post again if/when successful. And if anyone has REPEATEDLY and successfully dealt with 'mup.sys' please let us all know as you'll be inundated (with thanks) etc"
;)

I've now had two PC's (in about 10 SP2's I've done) that exhibit similar rebooting or hanging behaviour after SP2.
What appears to be the problem in my two cases, was something to do with SP2 conflicting with on-board AGP graphics controller drivers.
On one PC, with an ATI card removed, the PC hung at 'atisgkaf.sys'. I then put in an ATI PowerColor ATI Radeon 9200SE and told CMOS/BIOS to ignore the on-board AGP graphics controller.
I went in to Safe mode and let the system find the new video card, rebooted - and voila! XP loaded all the way in.
Later on, I removed this 'jockey video card' and voila! again, the system was now able to boot in to XP-SP2 - HOORAY!
On the second PC, it wanted to loop/reboot but I could see that the last driver loading was AGPSiS??.SYS (another one), so I did exactly the same - put an AGP PCI video card in, Safe Mode and reboot and all worked great.
So that's my contribution of a solution to this thread - Danny Robinson Perth, Australia.
