Comment:

I had to reformat my drive - then reinstall all the updates from Windows - now that im trying to install SP1 it keeps popping up with an error saying that "atapi.sys is open or being used by another program, close it and retry"

I closed every program and process running that i could and tried renaming the file (which only led me to reformat again)

Ive tried MS knowledge base and came up empty there, a few other boards and still no answer.

Anyone know what ican do to end this problem so i can contiune?

Thanx in advance

You have something interfering with this process and it's probably a trojan. I would suggest you wipe this install completely and try again, but disconnect from the internet UNTIL you get SP1 installed.

Good luck,

Well ive been discconected untill i go get the updates - i know its not a trojan - ive had Anti-virus software and Firewalls up and scans came up clean all the time -
SCSI and IDE controllers are up-to-date on their drivers.

i just dont understand this error - never has one file given me so much aggrivation :)

I had the same problem. In my case it was the virtualCD on Alcohol120%. I'd also heard this happens with Daemon Tools.

So, if you have one of these you could try uninstalling it.

ERROR: atapi.sys is open or in use by another application

do a search on your computer for atapi

or may look for it your self in this location

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers

once found, make a folder on your desk top and drag the file into this one new folder

now you can update your xp with sp1 / sp2

once upgraded your may delete this file...
dont worry! the sp1/spt installation will replace this file.

ENJOY!!!
