I'm so sick of hearing about this SP2. It isn't worth it - just messes things up. Don't install it! I have read that it makes the system less secure too.

More people seem to be having problems with it than those who like it, because Google gives more results for stuff like "sp2 sucks" and "sp2 is crap" than it does for stuff like "sp2 is awesome", "sp2 rocks", "sp2 rules" etc.

I like it. I had no problems on install. I haven't seen a pop-up since I installed it and the firewall is much more flexable and friendly then before.

Where did you devine that information from. The opposite is more likely to be true. All those millions that have installed it without problem have just forgotten about it and let it get on with it. Google searches are not a very good indicator at all.

>> I have read that it makes the system less secure too. <<

Where? Evidence? Statements like that without anything to back them up are worthless.

I have installed SP2 on three different computers. Two XP Home and one XP proffessional and have never had a problem with any of them - but then I know what I am doing.

SP2 is here to stay, and installing it is a step in the right path. It is optional @ the moment but things could change later down the road especially if certain softwares require it before they install or run.

I have not had any problems with it personally, @ least none that am aware of on my PC. I've had a few annoyance(s) with some feature(s) added to my system as a result of its installation but nothing that makes me want to consider uninstalling it.

With that said, create a Pre-SP2 tasks checklist and brace yourself in case things go awry, so long as your PC does not explode because of it (just kidding) it ought to be cakewalk.

Whom are you on computing.net?

I have successfully installed SP2 on many machines. I will share with you what I did.

First, I checked the manufacturer site to see whether they have pre-SP2 patches for the specific machine.

Second, I followed THIS LINK to ensure that each machine is free of malwares and so forth.

You can do the same thing too.

For what I know, there will be no fix for SP2 other than the normal critical updates. Waiting until November or December is not going to change anything.

I was scared to install it too for the longest time, but last wk I took the plunge!

I backed everything up, and did a fresh install of windows xp that was slipstreamed with sp2. You can make your own copy of Windows XP with all the current updates. Here's the link that I followed:

It is working great, no problem.

I too have successfully installed SP2 on many computers. Not a problem at all. Post #1 does not seem to know what he is talking about. Obviously shooting off the cuff without any evidence to back up his claims.

Gio Get SP2 on CD and install it. Heed the warnings above about getting your system cleaned up before you do it and also make a BACKUP of critical data before attempting the installation. If you follow this advice it will go without a hitch.

Good Luck.

I'd installed sp2 on 2 machines, one is fine but another can't download any files at all on ie or netcapter browsers.

I'd just tried to uninstall sp2 by windows restore but it keeps incompleted all the time.

dunno how to do now, and i don't want to format it, any advice for this case guy?

Well people you see the biggest problem with SP2 is that it is insecure - which is probably why you think it's working great, because there is no OBVIOUS problems. It isn't as easy to see that you're insecure as it is to see that you're slow or unstable or something...
Please please don't install SP2.

Thats a bit of muddled thinking if I ever saw any. I don't see SP2 as being insecure any more than any other version of Windows. In fact it is more so.

The lack of any OBVIOUS problems is usually a fair indication that something IS doing its job. Not a reason to avoid it because YOU cannot tell what it is doing. It is easy to see that your computer is secure if you know where to look and what to look for.
