Sound stutters and repeats... any help?

After installing winxp i noticed that my sound stutters and repeats (2 or 3 times) a lot, and it never did this before. I can't listen to MP3s anymore because they get so annoying and video game speech often stutters too. Anyone know what's wrong or how I can fix this? Is this a problem where audio isn't a high priority enough for my system (and i have to adjust this) or maybe it's my audio drivers?
BTW, this never happened to Win ME. I have 1 Ghz, 512 RAM, etc, etc, my system is loaded, this shouldn't be a problem for my computer. Someone help please!! :(

I have the same problem. I have an ABit KT7A mb and 900mhz AMD and a Sound Blaster 512 PCI card and I run XP. I find it happens mostly when Outlook checks my mail. It's really annoying. Does anyone have any clue as to what is causing this and how to fix it? My brother also runs XP but he doesn't have this problem.
