Sound stuttering with MX300 card

I have an MX300 (Vortex 2-based) sound card and have problems since installing XP. The problems are:
1. Sound stutters horribly whenever the hard disk is accessed. 2. Sometimes the sound will play for a while (maybe half an album's worth), then suddenly cut off. I have to reboot to get sound to work again.
I am using Microsoft's XP drivers for the sound card. I saw this fix: http://www.vortexofsound.com/techhelp/th-v2a80.htm BUT...I have an ASUS CUSL2 motherboard, NOT a Via-based board. That fix seems to only address Via boards.
The only other solutions I've seen are to (a) wait for new drivers, or (b) trash the MX300 and get a Creative Audigy card instead.
