I went to control panel and under Sounds, I changed the sound scheme to Windows Default, but the problem is when I press the play button, there is no sound. When I go to the folder and open that .wav file with Media Player, then I can hear the sound. What could be the problem? It is very annoying since I cannot hear any of the notification sounds with MSN messenger and other software that uses them. Help is greatly appreciated!

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volume Control

Select Properties from the Options menu. Under the list at the bottom, tick all of them.

Now, make sure that none of them are muted and that their volumes are all at maximum.

Now try playing the sounds through the Sounds dialog in the Control Panel.

I did all that, but when I went there, all the items were already checked and none of the items in the volume control were mute, they were all on maximum! I went back to play the sounds, and still cannot hear anything! I have surround sound speakers. The sound card is integrated with the motherboard which is Asus P4P800S. Is there anything else that could be doing this?

I have had the same problems, and still do. It seems to have something to do with changing the openGL config for app optimization on my nvidia Quadro FX 1000. New users have system sounds, but haven's found the way to fetch them for my user. Have done everything and only the registry and services are to be checked, but don't know where or how to start.
