Name: Nick R (by Nick Ritchie)
Iam curious if WinXP by default is suppose to install the sound recorder utility I have had in previous versions of Windows ? I just fixed a problem with the speaker icon not showing up in my taskbar ,apprently my system was missing the volume control app, sndvol.exe ? Microsoft sent me directions using the run ,cmd and then a command prompt to change my PC to read the file off my OEM CD ver on WinXP and install the sound control program ,it was difficult ,not being exprienced in working with using command propmts and even thou I was getting close to getting it to performdownloading the file off the CD and putting it in the system32 folder ,I could never get all the way there ? Then thru a google search I was lucky enough to come accross a forum where someone was having the same problem and another poster in the forum put the file on the forum in a .zip and I downloaded that and installed it and I was able to get back the volume control program and the speaker icon on the taskbar ,I looked for the sound recorder in the Control Panel Add/Remove Windows Components and could not locate any referance to it ! This was the same with my volume control program ,which should have been listed in the control panel as a option ? This is a fresh install of WinXP MCE 2005 after some spyware destroyed the originial installation from the manufactuer ,since I have been trouble shooting little things that are missing from the install I performed ,overall my PC is running well and most things are present .Does anyone know where I can go and download a copy of the Windows version of sound recorder ? I have it on my old PC running Windows Me ,however knowing they use a differant file system ,I would not want to try and extract that version and install it on a WinXP system ? Anyone that can be of help once again ,it would surely be apreciated !
Thank You ,Nick

Try
Start, then RUN, then type
sndrec32
See if it opens. In my XP, Volume Control is
sndvol32
NOT just sndvol

What Windows installs depends on whether you selected a Express ( typical settings) or Custom install when you ran Setup, and whether Setup detects your sound chipset. Typical settings will install sound recorder IF Windows Setup can determine it's chipset - if it doesn't it probably won't be installed.
For a Custom install, you must make sure sound related Windows apps are selected. As I told you before, after you have loaded Windows from scratch, after Setup has finished you must load the drivers for everything on the mboard.
If you are using onboard sound installing the drivers for the sound chipset on that will probably load Windows sound related apps too. If there is more than one to choose from, make sure you select the right one - see your mboard manual and/or the make and model of the sound chipset on the mboard.
If you are using a sound card in a slot, the same applies.
Installing sound drivers usually auto installs the volume Speaker icon in your taskbar. If the Sound Recorder is missing after installing sound chipset drivers, even after a reboot, try using Add Hardware to detect the sound chipset again - that should auto install the Sound Recorder.

Instead of using the 'extremely' limited Sound Recorder, I suggest that you download the free 'Audacity'.

Thank You for the replies and the info ,Chuck you are correct on my system the volume control panel is also sndvol32 ! I will try what you suggested ,I have tried re-installingthe sound chipset drivers off the Dell resource CD and still no joy ? I also am going to go to thewebsite for the other sound recorder ,put it in my favorites and then red up on it when i have some time later !
Thank You to All ,
Nick

"I have tried re-installingthe sound chipset drivers off the Dell resource CD and still no joy ?"
Is there more than one?
If it's Soundmax, or in any case, don't let Windows install the drivers for it while booting - Cancel that - they probably won't install correctly. Use the Install or Setup for the drivers.
If you've already installed it, Un-install it in Device Manager, Uninstall it's drivers in Add/Remove programs, reboot, Cancel pointing to where the drivers are while booting, use the Install or Setup for the drivers.

My system has intergraded sound Stigma-Tel 7.1 channel ! I have the Dell resource CD and installed the drivers more then once trying to get the sound recorder utility on my system ,also looking in the registry at HYKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Sound Rec\CLSID\Default Icon , there is no listing at all ? Also its not listed in the Add/Remove Windows Componwents in the Control Panel .I had a problem with the speaker icon not being on my taskbar ,tried reloading the Stigam-Tel drivers and that should have fixed the problem ,however it did not ,I did not have any referance to the volume control app in the system32 folder where it should have been? I eneded up getting lucky when I found the file for the speaker icon/volume control app in a forum where someone else was having the same problem ,so Iam not sure this is a Stigma-Tel problem ,more of a system problem relating to a missing file or registry entry ? As I state I have sound recorder on my old P3 running WindowsMe ,can I transfer that version of sound recorder to my WinXP PC or would they not be compatable ? If anyone who has Windows XP has this file in the system32 folder and would put it on the site in a .zip file that would be great ,if not allowed ,you can email it to me at rosierain@netzero.net ,Microsoft sent me directions on getting the volume control app and speaker icon back on my system, complicated directions that I was having a hard time getting to work ,then I was lucky to come accoss the needed file in a .zip on another forum and in about a minute I had the speaker icon back and the volume control program ! Thanks in advance to anyone that can help ,thanks for the replies and suggestions I have recieved so far ! Happy Holidays !
Nick

You haven't specifically said your sound works. Does it?
" My system has intergraded sound Stigma-Tel 7.1 channel ! I have the Dell resource CD and installed the drivers ..."
Are you SURE that's what you have?
Your symptoms have all the hallmarks of someone who pointed Windows to the location of the sound drivers while booting Windows - sound drivers, and many other drivers including video drivers, often won't install properly if you do that.
Did you try what I suggested?
"Un-install it in Device Manager, Uninstall it's drivers in Add/Remove programs, reboot, Cancel pointing to where the drivers are while booting, use the Install or Setup for the drivers."The Speaker icon not showing up in your Taskbar is a very minor thing. Sometimes whoever compiled the drivers forgot to enable that. You just open up Sounds and Audio Devices in Control panel, and click on the box beside Plce Volume icon in the Taskbar to make a checkmark appear, click OK.
By the way, what does it say under the Audio
tab in Sounds and Audio Devices for Default Device??
It should say Stigma-Tel something or other.
XP does not have Sound Recorder available to select in Add/Remove Programs - that's normal.
The few times(once?) I didn't have that, installing the sound drivers with it's Install or Setup fixed the problem.Don't put your email address in your post - malware and hackers can find that and cause you grief.
Instead ask to have someone contact you via a Personal Message, a feature of this site - if you want to provide your email address in that, that's fine - no one else can see it except whoever contacts you.
......Copying the older Sound Recorder from ME, or having the sndrec32.exe to copy to C:\Windows\system32, won't necessarily work - it probably has to be registered too, and there may be other files you need.
If you know how to use the Recovery Console feature of your XP CD (in your case the first one of the 2 OEM CD set), in that you can use
(all in one line)
Copy (d:)\i386\sndrec32.ex_ C:\Windows\system32 (press Enter)where (d:) is the actual drive letter of a drive the CD is in as seen in the Recovery Console - Recovery Console's Copy auto expands compressed files on the CD, in this case to sndrec32.exe
But that may not be enough.
(There is also Soundrec.ch_ (becomes .chm)
and Soundrec.hl_ (becomes .hlp) in \i386
- they go to C:\Windows\Help; there may be other files you need )

Yes Tubesandwires ,
Iam sure I have the Stigma-Tel 7.1 Channel intergrated audio on my PC ,in fact after the fresh re-install of my O/S ,using the Dell supplied resource CD I installed the drivers for that intergrated audio ! The sound recorder utility is a Windows Based Utlity ,that should be located in the system32 folder as sndrec32.exe, however on my system it was missing ,just as the volume control app was also not listed in that folder sndvol32.exe which gives you the ability to put the speaker icon on your taskbar and open the volume control program to set your volume ,mute you microphone and set its volume etc. Well ther sndvol32 app I was lucky enough to find in a zip file on a web site that someone posted ,the sndrec32 application I had my neighbor bring his laptop over and we put the file on a flash drive I have and then put it in the system32 folder .This gave me the sndrec utility ,however I now realize its a very limited application that lets you record only one minute audio files off your microphone and save them in only .wav format which takes up alot of room, size wise the less then a minute test file I made was almost 3M.B.'s ,I guess on a 250G.B. hard drive I should not worry to much ,however if I can find a way to save hard drive space I will ! Someone listed a link to a freeware audio application that gives you the ability to save the files in MP3 format and record much longer voice and other sounds to a file ! The web site with this freeware app is >http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ in case you are interested !
Happy Holidays ,Nick

As I said in Response 7, you can extract sndrec32.exe from your own XP CD.
Well, at least you have established that merely copying sndrec32.exe to the proper place on the hard drive is enough for it to work.
"....using the Dell supplied resource CD I installed the drivers for that intergrated audio"
That CD is meant to be used with the original Dell software installation. In that case the sound drivers install may not have what is necessary in the code to install the Sound Recorder, and are depending on something in the Dell software installation that is already there that is not there when you install XP from a regular CD (or CDs in the case of OEM MCE).
Dell should have the sound drivers in the software downloads for the model - they may or may not install Sound Recorder. In any case, as I said before,
"Your symptoms have all the hallmarks of someone who pointed Windows to the location of the sound drivers while booting Windows - sound drivers, and many other drivers including video drivers, often won't install properly if you do that."If you can't get any of the Dell supplied drivers to install Sound Recorder, I would normally suggest you try to find generic drivers for the sound chipset.
You have made a typo, several times.
No such thing as StigmaTel.
It's SigmaTel.
They make the chipset and have a web site,
http://www.sigmatel.com
but have no drivers available."Support
SigmaTel does not support end-user products, please contact the manufacturer of your device for customer support, software or driver downloads. If you feel your issue needs to be addressed by SigmaTel support, please send an e-mail to support@sigmatel.com "

Hi Tubesandwires,
I apoligize for the typos, I have a bad habit of trying to type faster then my ability allows me to ,and then failing to proof read my post B/4 posting it on the board! I went ahead and installed the freeware app Audacity and it has so much more to offer then the very limited Windows Sound Recorder !
Tahks Again , Nick
