Sound Recorder in Win XP

I have been trying to record using a mic on my Dell desktop (a year old Dell). Because of problems with Vista I just had it removed and XP installed. The mic won't record using XP's Sound Recorder. When I click on record button I get the following. "Not enough memory available to complete this operation. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory and then try again." I use my Sound Recorder a lot. I am making a video now and need to use this. Any funtions on the sound recorder to crop, etc give me the same Not Enough Memory message. I have 3GB Ram just installed. Any ideas of what the problem is and why I can't use the recorder or get the message? Thanks

As far as the WinXP recorder goes the drivers for you multimedia sound device are probably not the correct ones.

I agree with Othehill. Check the Device Manager for problems. Right click 'My Computer' > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager.

Thanks for responses. I really don't know what I am doing. I've done and changed about everything on a PC but when it comes to the device manager it's not in English to me. I checked like you said and there are 7 things listed under Sounds, Video & Game Controllers. I right clicked on all of them and it said they were all working properly? I'm assuming that's what I was supposed to do. I don't know what I'm looking for or what else to do. I downloaded Audacity but now have to figure out how to use it. Thanks again.

Then try opening the advance settings for sound. There may be something muted. I think the default for a mic is muted.
