Sound Problems with XP

Specs: Windows XP
I must admit to knowing little about computers and need some advice, my sound on nearly all applications has gone, firefox just refuses to play sounds but works fine and I tunes/media player complain about audio configuration problems i tried getting the newest drivers and reseting my computers audio but to no avail, i still have dxdiag errors such as DirectSound test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x88780078 (No driver). However the odd thing is that some games run sound perfectly, I cant find anything online for partial sound problems like this can someone please help me

I can only give you some things to check. Go to the control
panel - Administrator Tools - Services.
See if Plug and Play is started and Windows Audio.
And while in Administrator Tools check Event Viewer for errors.
Learn how to use it.

Check for codex that you might need.

Re-Install anything that plays sound that you use.

Kelly's corner might help.

You may not have the right sound Drivers.
