sound problems (quiet vocals)

Specs: Windows XP
Up until recently mp3's played perfectly on my desktop PC but all of a sudden a few weeks ago something happened and now the sound is tinny and in some songs I can barely hear the vocals.

I have tried another set of speakers but the problem still remains. I have also re-installed my Sigma Tel sound card driver with no success.

I can only assume this is a software issue... maybe related to audio codecs?

loll, possible you're using a different critter to open the files and it sounds different? RIGHTCLICK a file and 'open with' something different. Find a list of 'what opens what' @:

Maybe that'll help?

One thought is that if you know about when things went wrong, and you have a "system restore" point for around that time, try a system restore. System restores can always be reversed, you can go back to the original point.

If you can do that, and it works for you, be careful what you install after that...you'll have to re-install Windows updates that were available after the restore point, but be careful not to take drivers from Windows update site. I've never had a satisfactory experience from installing drivers from Windows Update.
