All of a sudden I'm having an audio problem on my Win XP computer. The problem is with audio from web pages. I'm using Firefox but I'm having the same problems with IE.
I'm able to receive streaming audio (from radio stations, etc.) but I'm not able to receive web audio that's delivered on a web page from an mp3.
I also have problems with audio on camtasia and other on screen videos. I've had audio from specific web pages in the past but not today. The same is true with specific camtasia videos. I used to have sound but not now.
I've also tried these same web pages on another computer and they play fine, so it's unique to this computer.
I don't have any problems with audio from my computer, such as mp3, mpeg, avi, and other audio and video sources.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Have you tried a System Restore to a date before this problem started?
Life's more painless for the brainless.

Double click the speaker in the lower right corner of the screen. Select Options > properties and make sure everything is selected. Then click ok and make sure none of the selections are muted or turned down.

Guys, thanks for your help.
First, I think you might be on to something regarding the codex. It wasn't long after installing a new codex recommend by a friend that I began having probs. Prior to that everything was fine. I installed the codex you recommended but I'm still not getting sound.
During the codex install I got a msg saying an installed codex (Oog or something like that) has been know to have probs and it asked me if I wanted it removed, which I indicated I did.
The first step I took was with the volume control changes you suggested. After making the changes I still had three check marks in various mute boxes (I don't remember which boxes) and I unchecked them from the main view.
After making these changes l still have no sound but ended up with a loud "hum" that wasn't there before. When I muted the mic the hum stopped.
Should I have check marks in any of the 8 different controls? As I said earlier, there were three check marks before I removed them. Could this be related to my sound problem?
The mixer device indicates SoundMax Digital Audio, but there is also an option to use Total Recorder (which I use to record Internet audio). Should I use that or stick with the SoundMax?
I hope this is helpful.
Any idea?

After rebooting my computer this morning I've discovered that I now don't hear any sound at all, and this includes the sounds that specific programs make upon open and closing. After making the changes last night I still had sound as described previously. Now I've got nothing.
Any ideas on this new issue as well as everything before?
Thanks.
