The pc was running fine until one day I did a repair now everything works fine, even the sound, except for two problems.

One, I don't have the volume control and before I could adjust the volume with the keyboard but now that don't work. I can go to control panel, sounds and devices, and adjust the volume there without problems but whether the "Place volume icon in bar" is checked, it doesn't seem to make a difference, no volume control is visible.

The next problem is that I can listen to CDs and music on my pc fine but none of the windows default sounds are heard and when I log onto a web browser or use an internet related program like AIM or Yahoo! Messenger, etc, no sound.

Does anybody have a freaking clue what is going on and how I can go about fixing it?

I have the sound driver, latest, and obviously if I hear sound with some stuff, it's not the sound card, it has to be integrated with some sort of codec or driver in windows. Any clue? Any help? THANKS A BUNCH!

theunorthodox, agree with you, card must be O.K. or it'd be silent, that leaves driver. Do you suppose the wrong one got selected after the repair? Think I'd try another. Maybe compare using restore?

XP has a habit of sometimes installing the wrong driver, if you don't install the driver yourself.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

I don't think it's the driver because otherwise there wouldn't be any sound at all, but there is, only I can't listen to default Windows sounds or any sounds over the internet or adjust the volume with the keyboard. What I think is that it may be the hard drive as it was acting up and when before I did the repair, certain programs but not ALL in Windows would lag, like Internet Explorer or Control Panel. But after the repair they work fine but the volume icon/control is missing. Any clues, ideas?

I just installed a sound card and it works and everything, as the onboard one did, but there is still no volume control and I still can't here sounds online or the default XP sounds. Does anybody have a freaking clue what is going on?!?

I also did a repair but after the repair the sound started messing up. I can still hear CDs and music on media and what not but no default windows sounds and no sound from the internet and no volume icon on the bottom right corner.
