Comment:

My computer crashed during installation of SP1 on XP shortly after I had installed linux on a seperate partition. I was able to recover XP by partially reinstalling the OS from the CDROM (which I legally own). Since then, the sound doesn't work under XP or linux and I feel like I have tried everything: basic troubleshooting, reinstalling drivers, etc. Any suggestions welcome, I don't want to have to reinstall XP again cause then I'll have to reconfigure linux again...you know.

Get better speakers. It's not your computer it's your speakers. Go to your local Best Buy and get a new pair. Any pair should work.
