Sound not working properly.

Specs: Windows XP
This started a few days ago when I used my microphone
headset to chat on Skype. After I unplugged them,
the sound stopped coming through the laptop speaker. The sound plays fine if the
headphones are in, but goes silent after they are

Metal parts inside the sockets may have gone bad.
Such sockets on laptops appear to be rather cheap to me.

I agree with Chuck. It's most likely a damaged headphone jack. It has a switch inside to disconnect the speakers when a headphone jack is plugged in.

It wasn't anything in the volume controls. There's a good chance
Chuck has the right idea. Is there any way I can check/repair
this problem?
