After re-installing Windows XP my sound is really sporadic. It cuts in and out randomly and I have no idea why. In my Device Manager-> Sound, video and game controllers the following are listed:
-Audio Codecs
-Legacy Audio Drivers
-Legacy Video Capture Device
-Media Control Devices
-SounddMAX Intergrated Digital Audio
-Video CodecsAll of there drivers are working propperly and no conflicts.
I tried re-installing the drivers for SoundMAX only but it didn't solve the problem. Is there any else I can do? Thanks

Have you tryed using a different set of speakers or a set of headphones? If not try it and see if it stops.

Thanks for the reply Sandman. I did try another set of speakers and also tried headphones and got the same results. Anything else I can try?..thanks

Two things to try,
1. Wiggle the speaker cord and see if the problem gets worse. Probably not the problem but worth checking.
2. Uninstall the driver, reboot, and then reinstall the latest driver.
I have an onboard SoundMax soundcard and I have to be honest, the sound on it isn't that great. After getting a new Sound Blaster soundcard I noticed a huge improvment in sound quality. Plus onboard sound uses your main processor to do it's work. Since you have a P4 that probably won't matter much to you but I thought I would mention it LOL. You can get a decent soundcard for around $50
