Problem: After formating hardrive and reinstalling XP Home, I was without sound. If I attempted to play a sound file it said the device wasn't installed.

-Onboard 3D Audio
-52X CD ROM Black
-Onboard 10/100 NIC

-1 X 80MM Double Ball Bearing Smart Fan
-2 X 80MM Double Ball Bearing Smart Fan
-300W Approved Power Supply
-Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
-Standard 1 Year Warranty w/ Tech SupportWhat I have done:
Over a 2 day timespan I've done a lot, I hope I don't get to much out of order, or leave anything valuable out...
I went to Asus's website and looked up my motherboard. There I found a list of downloads based off my motherboard. I downloaded the audio drivers they provided. I then used the add new hardware wizard to attempt to add them. Everything went succesful, it accepted the drivers and said my device was working properly. But when I went to play a sound file, it ran smoothly, no device failure promts, but still.. no sound. The file would play, but I got no music. So I suspected my speakers. I switched those out with a set I knew worked, and still nothing.
So I decided to check out C-Media's site. I went to Techsupport - Drivers - and the was confused. I had several diffrent types. So I refered back to the summary at ASUS's website ( http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=P4S533-VM ) It said that my audio was:- C-Media CMI8738 4-channel AC '97 Codec
SiS 962L S/PDIF out interfaceSo looking back at C-media's site.. There was no CMI8738 in the AC '97 Codec section. Well I remembered the ASUS downloads had me download a 9738. Which i felt was odd...
Well to sum it up, I tried both those drivers. I got errors like Code 10 - Device could not start after installing. The only drivers that seem to work are the ones from ASUS, yet they still give me no sound.
Um... can anyone help? :)

go to control panel ....sounds and devices and check all your settings. it could be something simple....once when i re-installed the check was in the mute box for some odd reason....check all the simple things first.

Well cold613,
I checked all the little things, atleast to my knowledge. :)My sound isn't muted in the Volume Control; which I should mention that the volume control only exists if I install using the ASUS drivers...
